In June 2009, James announced himself to the Lincolnshire ECB Premier League with a sublime, unbeaten 89 against Market Deeping 1st XI. Since then, in the absence of Scott Indian, James has established himself as the First Team's regular number four batsman.

That innings was the end of a quest for James, who had spent the preceding years moving between the firsts and Dan Healey's Second Team. Equipped with his trademark cut shot, James eventually rose to prominence.

Despite being a prolific run-maker in the CTCC junior setup, James was primarily a bowler in his younger years - a skill he may reignite in 2012.
